PANS & PANDAS Treatment for Children

When a typically developing child suddenly becomes highly anxious, agitated, or intensely emotional, it can be overwhelming to know how to respond or where to find appropriate treatment. PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) and PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal Infections) are neuropsychiatric conditions affecting children that can be difficult to evaluate and diagnose.

Symptoms of PANS/PANDAS

  • Sudden onset of obsessive-compulsive behaviors
  • Severe anxiety
  • Mood swings
  • Behavioral changes, such as aggression or irritability
  • Difficulty with motor skills or coordination

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis involves a clinical evaluation and ruling out other conditions. Treatment may include antibiotics (for PANDAS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and other supportive measures. Collaboration among pediatricians, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals is essential for effective care. While the onset of symptoms may be triggered by an underlying illness, working with a specialized mental health provider remains an important part of supporting a child’s ongoing progress in managing obsessive and compulsive symptoms and their lasting effects.
