Depression Treatment for Children, Teens, and Adults

Depression is something most people experience in some form throughout their lifetime, but clinical depression is more persistent and can significantly affect daily functioning and well-being. Many people picture depression as excessive crying, constant negative thinking, or difficulty getting out of bed, but clinical depression doesn’t always look this way.

Common Symptoms of Clinical Depression

  • Withdrawn behavior
  • Dysthymic or persistently low mood
  • Negative thinking patterns
  • Dwelling on negative thoughts or events
  • Frequent tearfulness
  • Procrastination
  • Suicidal ideation or attempts
  • Self-injurious behavior
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Fatigue
  • Low or no motivation

How Depression Looks Different in Children

Children often express depression differently than adults, through difficulty expressing emotions, withdrawal, or even anger, rather than obvious sadness. While emotional ups and downs are a normal part of childhood, a child experiencing clinical depression will typically show a low mood that persists for weeks rather than lifting on its own. They may describe feeling consistently down or blue.

What Depression Treatment Looks Like

The most common and effective treatment for depression combines Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with medication management when appropriate. In CBT, individuals learn to identify the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and develop strategies to challenge negative cognitive distortions and support a more stable, balanced mood. Depression can be difficult to navigate, especially given the low motivation it often causes, which can lead to feelings of helplessness or hopelessness. With professional support, meaningful change and improvement are achievable.
